The case of electromagnetic vs centrifugal clutches - Who wins?
Back in the day, electromagnetic clutches were known for their quick and harsh engagements. However, this was back when smart controls weren't commercially available. For that reason, centrifugal clutches were sometimes the only choice. Well, times have changed and electromagnetic clutches have many successful years of experience on floor grinding equipment, construction equipment, floor cleaning equipment, portable band saws, augers, mowers, stump grinders, fan and straw blowers, and more engine driven outdoor power equipment thanks in part to soft start controllers. Electromagnetic clutches have taken the clear lead today.
Because soft start controllers weren't commercially feasible in the past, centrifugal clutches were used but they still lacked the functionality of electromagnetic clutches. Electromagnetic clutches allow for increased safety and convenience through simple on/off switch operation. They are used in conjunction with operator presence controls for safety. They also help to extend belt life and help with cold starts, to name a few more reasons they excel.
As a safety example, a floor grinder won't jump off of the floor when you start it at full throttle because the clutch will not be engaged yet. Grinding pads, cutting blades and cutting wheels will be under greater control while equipment warms up. This is especially important for rental equipment where experience might be lacking, and the operation of the equipment might be a little bit more aggressive.
Soft start controllers are available for Ogura's GT and MA series of General Purpose clutches and for GT series of PTO clutch brakes. These clutches are often mounted on engine shafts. They range in torque from around 110 lb-ft to 400 lb-ft for engines ranging from 5 HP to 40 HP. Bore sizes for most models correlate to popular engine shaft sizes of 1" to 1.7/16" but custom designs can be made for the right quantity.
