What's braking at the ports?
Ogura's spring applied brakes for cranes are holding things up, in a good way!
The world's economies depend on smooth and safe operating ports. A 20-foot shipping container can weigh up to 55,000 lbs., and a 40-foot container can weigh double that or more. There must be a safety element to port cranes to protect people and goods in the case of a system failure or power outage. Power-off spring applied holding brakes are a solution fit for the job.
Ogura's MNB40VLC series brakes are designed for the application. Firstly, they are IP67 rated to withstand environmental concerns. Any water or dust intrusion into the brake or friction surfaces can lower reliability. The brake is designed to stay dry and provide long life, reliability, and safety.
The brakes have a manual release lever. This lever can be actuated manually to release the brake for service or emergencies when there is no electrical power available to release the brake. This is often difficult when dealing with IP67 rated brakes, but Ogura has found the solution. When the lever is moved, the brake's pressure plate is mechanically moved towards the brake's coil to compress the brake springs. This allows free movement of the brake's friction disc which is connected to the brake hub and rotating shaft.
The brakes are designed and built to be mounted in the vertical orientation if needed. The brakes are normally mounted on electric motors. Since gravity is acting on the internal brake components, other brakes tend to want to inadvertently drag against each other cause premature wear. This series is ok to mount in the vertical orientation.
MCNB-40VLC series brakes have static torque ratings ranging from 160 to 400 Nm (min torque). These brakes are spring applied type, electrically actuated. When electrical current is applied, the brake is released. When the current is removed, the brake engages. Torque is generated mechanically by springs' normal force that squeezes the friction disc between a moving pressure plate and a stationary cover plate.
